Join Care Alliance Ireland in #MakingCaringVisible during National Carers Week

Jun 05, 2020

Almost 400,000 family carers will be celebrated from June 8-14, as part of the annual National Carers Week.

Family carers all over Ireland dedicate their time and energy to loved ones who need care, often at great personal sacrifice.

This year, Covid-19 has posed even greater challenges for family carers, as many of the essential services they rely on for assistance have been forced to close or postpone activities.

Nevertheless, the organisers, Care Alliance Ireland, plan to hold a range of online events during the week, taking the theme #MakingCaringVisible.

“Whilst the theme of the week has often been focused on celebrating the contribution of family carers to their loved ones, and to Irish society, this year we have a different emphasis. Listening to Family Carers who are part of our online carer support group, many report feeling that they remain largely invisible in the public discourse around Covid-19,” says Carers Alliance Ireland.

“We have therefore decided on the theme of #MakingCaringVisible for this years’ week. This is the same theme as our friends in the UK are using in their own Carers Week for 2020, and one which speaks to the invisibility and isolation that family carers often feel – but which is currently exacerbated by Covid-19.”

Home Instead Senior Care has long supported family carers through public information campaigns which offer free useful information and dedicated workshops, such as the Senior Citizen and Family Carer Guidebook, and dementia workshops during World Alzheimer’s Month.

“Home Instead’s public information campaigns encourage families to plan ahead, and consider how all family members can assist when things get difficult, and what options there are to ask for help when there is no alternative family support,” says Michael Wright, Director of Public Affairs at Home Instead Senior Care.

According to Care Alliance Ireland’s website, some of the events the organisation has lined up include
  • Live Carer Café - Open to all Family Carers.
  • Live Twitter Chat in collaboration with Dr. Liam Farrell #IrishMed.
  • Launch of our updated The Way Ahead booklet – for former carers
  • Zoom Chat and Raffle with Family Carers who have joined our Private Facebook Online Support Group.
