September is World Alzheimer’s Month

Sep 06, 2017

September is World Alzheimer’s Month, an international campaign to raise awareness and challenge the stigma often associated with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. This global movement is united by a call for change, but is also a time to reflect on the impact of dementia, a disease that will affect more people as the years pass. World Alzheimer’s Day is marked on 21 September each year.

There are almost 55,000 people living with dementia in Ireland and this number is expected to rise to 153,157 by 2046, according to the study, The Prevalence of Dementia in Ireland, by Suzanne Cahill and Maria Pierce.

To mark World Alzheimer’s Month and support a growing number of people affected by dementia, a series of dementia care workshops will be hosted throughout the country. Specifically, the dementia care workshops will help attendees to:

  • Understand Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia
  • Understand behaviour and cognitive symptoms associated with dementia
  • Learn and role play starting conversations for effective communication
  • How to keep people living with dementia safe in the community

The dementia care workshops are provided free of charge. A growing number of people are turning to Home Instead Senior Care for specialist Alzheimer’s and dementia care at home. Over half of the people we are providing care for are living with a type of dementia and are looking to be treated respectfully and with dignity as well as receiving support with activities of daily living such as meal preparation, transportation and personal care.

Until there is a cure, there is care

Research and advances are happening more frequently than ever before when it comes to treating Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. However, there is currently no cure for dementia. But until there is a cure, there is care and these workshops are designed to share care approaches that will make a positive difference in the lives of people affected by dementia – both the person with the diagnosis as well as their loved ones and circle of friends and carers.

The table below outlines the workshops in your local community. To sign up visit the registration page here or call 1890 989 755.
