How tax relief can make home care affordable for you and your loved one
Mar 29, 2022

Along with the comfort and dedication that clients feel from receiving private relationship-based homecare, another wonderful benefit is its affordability. If you employ a professional home carer you can apply for tax relief of up to €75,000 on the cost of the care received.

This financial aid helps to make staying at home a more affordable, accessible option for ageing adults.

Employing a private carer through an agency, like us at Home Instead, means we look after all the responsibilities of the carer’s wages, tax, and social insurance. All you need to do is claim the tax relief.

Rules:
If you or a loved one is being cared for, you must be totally incapacitated for the complete tax year in which you are claiming tax relief. The carer, however, does not have to be employed for the full tax year.

Rates:
The amount of tax relief received is based on individual rates of tax. It is claimed by the bill payer and paid by their marginal rate of tax (either 20% or 40%). The maximum deduction for employing a carer in 2022 is €75,000.

You must claim the relief every year. You can choose to receive the relief on an annual or monthly basis.
