Stay safe in the sun

A recent report by the Irish Cancer Society, which revealed that the incidence of melanoma skin cancer has increased by 91% between 1998 and 2008. What is an even more startling statistic is that the biggest increase of melanoma skin cancer is in people in their 60’s and 70’s. These figures reveal a frightening reality – more seniors are getting cancer.

At Home Instead Senior Care we can only re-iterate what the Irish Cancer Society advises in its recently launched Sunsmart campaign. Check your skin regularly and monitor any changes of shape, colour and size of moles or freckles. And if you do notice any changes contact your G.P. straight away.

We also want families and carers of seniors to be aware of these changes and if they notice any anomalies to get in touch with the senior’s G.P. or the Irish Cancer Society.

By being mindful of the damage the sun’s UVA and UVB rays can do to skin, it is important to always wear high protection factor (SPF of 15 or more), wear a hat and t-shirt and keep out of the sun between 11am and 3pm.
