Explosive growth for home care sector

The home care industry is expected to grow by leaps bounds over the next decade and beyond.  Approximately 161,000 people identify themselves are carers in Ireland,  according to recent CSO data. Most carers (62%) are females providing an average of 24 hours of care per week. By 2021, if current ratios persist, there will be a requirement for over 205,000 carers- this represents an increase of 28% in the number of carers.

Fueling the demand in this job sector will be the growing number of older adults who may be plagued with health problems and need assistance with activities of daily living.  By 2026, the over 75 population will more then triple in Ireland alone.  Home Instead Senior Care is representative of the growth that this field is experiencing.

These CAREGivers are the foundation of Home Instead Senior Care and without them none of our growth as a home care provider would be possible.

So who are the caregivers who are working in this growing career field?  According to a recent home care survey, 92 percent of all CAREGivers are female, with most falling in the 40–64 age group.  Many do not have extensive experience in the labour force, but more than make up for it with experience caring for individuals by providing home care or help services

We find that these CAREGivers’ backgrounds are varied. Some have been caring for loved ones who pass away and they’ve discovered a talent and love of providing care to older adults.  Others are seniors themselves who are looking for a fulfilling part-time job.  And some have left the corporate world for a job they feel has more meaning to them.

The home care survey revealed only 1 percent of Home Instead’s CAREGivers reported that money was their greatest source of job satisfaction, while 95 percent indicated that “helping others in some way” is what motivates them.   Past home care surveys of seniors consistently have revealed that most seniors plan to try to age at home.  And many of those will need someone to provide a few extra hours of help each day or every week.
